Can Orb run on Windows 2000 Professional or Windows Server 2003? |

If you install Orb on a Windows 2000 (you will need to add GDIPlus.DLL in your System32 folder) or a Windows Server 2003 system, you will be able to enjoy all the features of Orb but live or recorded TV if you are using a MPEG-2 TV tuner (a tuner with a built-in MPEG-2 hardware encoder).
Orb uses Microsoft's Stream Buffer Engine (SBE) for streaming live and recorded TV in systems with a MPEG-2 tuner. The SBE was introduced in Windows XP and is not compatible with legacy OSes. So, if you install Orb on W2K and Server 2003, you will be able to stream audio and video files from your PC, even TV programs recorded in most formats (ASF, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, etc) except DVR-MS (encdec.DLL, a component of the SBE, is required to decrypt this file type). You will also be able to stream your webcam, as well as Internet radio and TV channels and enjoy other features (Weather, Finance, etc.) from the Web, share your photos and videos with friends, and access other Orb functionalities such as File Browser. If you are using a software-based tuner (non MPEG-2), you may be able to stream live and recorded TV in Orb. This type of tuners is not supported by Orb but many of these devices happen to work, whenever the audio input can be properly configured. The notorious exception to this are the small form-factor, compact USB 2.0 TV tuner “sticks”. Note: while you cannot stream live TV in Orb with an MPEG-2 tuner, you can convert its TV recordings from DVR-MS to another format (MPEG, AVI, etc.) to stream the converted recordings in Orb. There are several utilities which can extract the MPEG stream from a DVR-MS file and convert it to other formats (i.e, DivX AVI, etc.). There are many Internet resources you can consult for more information on this, such as this thread Crunchie Version 1.1 Released! on the Australian Media Center Community forum. |
