I get a "Server timeout" error in Real Player on my phone that has the T-Mobile unlimited data plan (T-Zones) |
||||
The T-Mobile service in the US blocks TCP port 554 for users that have subscribed to the unlimited GPRS data plan. This effectively prevents Real Player (a.k.a., RealOne Player) on mobile devices to receive Real media streams (i.e., .RM, .RAM) sent by default to port 554, and causes a "Server timeout..." error.
To circumvent this T-Mobile limitation and force the streaming of Real media to another port in Orb:
1. Navigate to Orb tray icon > Configuration > Advanced (or More info, on older Orb versions) on your Orb PC and change your Real media port to another port, like 555 for example
1a. If you have a router with UPnP enabled, check the Use UPnP for DirectStream checkbox and click the Check button to verify that it works; or
1b. If UPnP does not work with your router, set Port Forwarding on your router for the new Real media port you selected (i.e., 555 in our example). For information on how to set Port Forwarding on your router:
- go to PortForward.com
- select your router model
- select Orb
- follow the instructions.
Either method will change the Real media communication port and should enable you to stream Orb media on your phone with this T-Mobile plan*.
Note:* if that still does not work, it may be because you are one of the unlucky ones who uses a phone (like the Sanyo MM7400) which does not allow RTSP streaming on any other port than 554. Streaming of .ra, .ram Internet TV / Internet Radio URLs are not supported in 2.5x series.
