IR Blaster not working in Orb on Vista Home Basic and Business editions
- If you are using Vista Home Basic or Business edition, you will not be able to change TV channels on your
set-top box via Orb, as we do not yet support IR blasters on these editions.
Workaround:
None for Satellite TV.
However, if you are using a Cable TV set-top box, you can
install a Y-splitter from your coaxial cable source and
connect one branch directly to your TV tuner. While doing
this will prevent you from accessing the "extra channels"
provided by your set-top box, you will be able to remotely
change al the other standard cable channels via Orb. |
 |
Cannot dedicate a TV tuner for Orb use
- If you have
installed Orb on a PC with 2 or more TV tuners, you will not
be able to configure Orb to only use a dedicated tuner or to
not use a designated tuner. Orb will always look for and
attempt to use an MPEG-2 tuner, if one is present. So, if
you have 2 MPEG-2 tuners installed on your PC, you cannot
configure Orb to ignore the tuner you wish to reserve
exclusively for, say, Media Center.
Note: the only way to play
TV locally in another PVR application (Media Center,
BeyondTV, WinTV, etc.) while simultaneously streaming live
TV via Orb, is by launching the Orb stream first then
starting the local PVR application on your Orb PC. |
 |
MCE-recorded
TV shows have wrong duration in Orb
- Orb displays a
wrong duration (i.e., 14 sec, etc.) for MCE-recorded TV
shows but will still stream the entire file in WMP, Winamp,
Real, Flash and 3GP. This bug will be fixed with the
re-design of OrbPVR.
Workaround: record in Orb
itself (not Media Center) the TV shows you wish to access
via Orb, to get the correct duration of these recordings. |

iTunes playlists don't show up in Orb - Orb has the ability to import / display local playlists that exist on the Orb PC. However, in case of iTunes playlists this feature hasn't been working for a while, and we are working on fixing it. Till the time we fix this, we suggest you to try the following :
Workaround: On your Orb PC, click Start > Run* type regedit (Disclaimer: Use the Registry Editor at your own risk) > In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Orb Networks\Orb\Config doubleclick on "app.iTunes.enabled" > In the pop up change the Value data to "true" > Close the Registry Editor > Restart Orb > Now login again to view the itunes playlists on the UI.
* If you do not see "Run" in your Start Menu then press Windows Start Key+R.

Stream one Live TV channel in Winamp, and then another
one right away: audio is lost
- This is a bug in WinAmp:
when starting a stream with timestamp > 0, Winamp plays the
video but not the audio until reaching the time that matches
the timestamp; then it hangs the video until the audio
catches up and reaches the same timestamp of the video, so
it can then play both in sync. |
 |
QAM digital TV channels
not supported
- QAM tuners are not supported in orb at
this time and, therefore, digital cable channels and QAM-based
HD programming cannot be streamed in Orb without going
though a set-top box. |
 |
Outlook 2007 security warning when installing Orb
- The first time you install Orb, you may get a security
warning from Outlook 2007 prompting you to "Allow or Deny"
the Orb Setup wizard from accessing your Outlook contacts.
You may experience the same each time you restart Orb. This
is a security system from Microsoft which triggers this
pop-up only on a computer which does not have an antivirus
installed or which has outdated antivirus definitions.
Workaround:
install an antivirus software or update your
exisiting antivirus software with current virus definitions.
Note that in Outlook 2007 (Tools > Trust Center >
Programmatic access), there is an option to receive alert
messages whenever a third party program tries to access your
contact info, even when your Antivirus software is active
and updated. So, make sure that this option is not enabled. |

Incompatibility with RDP Audio drivers used by Remote
Desktop programs
- If you have Remote Desktop or other
remote access program (e.g., GoToMyPC, etc.) running on your
Orb PC when you are streaming, the audio may be played
locally on your Orb PC instead of being sent to your Orb
client device, or you may not get any audio at all. This is
because these programs use RDP audio drivers and set them as
default.
Workaround: in your remote desktop
application, change the default setting which leaves the
computer sound at your remote computer to bring it to your
Orb client PC. |
 |
No support for VOBsub filters
-
There is no implementation at this time of VOBsub filters
(e.g., DirectVobSub filters, Gabest's DvobSub, etc.) in the
OrbSourceFilter. So, if you rip DVDs with sub-titles, you
may have a green bar instead of the actual sub-titles at the
bottom of your screen. |
 |
Incompatibility with Morgan
Stream Switcher
- Similarly, if you are using the Morgan
codec and have the Morgan Stream Switcher filter installed
(which enables you to stream the language of sub-titles
on-the-fly while streaming), you will not get any audio at
all when streaming these VOBs via Orb. To re-enable sound in
this case, you will need to disable this stream switcher
filter in the Morgan codec tray icon configuration menu.
Workaround:
-
go to a command prompt (Windows desktop | Start |
Run | type cmd, click OK)
-
navigate to the Orb\bin folder (default location is
C:\Program Files\Orb Networks\Orb\bin)
-
unregister the OrbSourceFilter.ax by typing regsvr32
/u OrbSourceFilter.ax then exit the command prompt
-
Install FFDshow instead.

Files with a .RMI extension cannot be streamed in
all Orb Supported Players
- Orb has no control over
midi files which render directly to the audio hardware
(i.e., your sound card). We have no workaround for that
at this time. |
 |
Can't stream Orb media to a client PC
behind a corporate firewall
- this may happen if you
have set up your Windows media port for DirectStream
(Orb tray icon > Configuration >
Advanced
(or More info,
depending on your Orb version)) to any other port than
TCP port 80 and the corporate firewall at your workplace
blocks incoming connections on any other port than port
80. The same thing could occur for DirectStreaming Real
media to other port than TCP 554.
Workaround:
if, for whatever reason, you cannot use ports 80 and 554
on your home PC, from your client PC, add the files you
want to stream to a playlist which you then add to your
public profile. You will then be able to stream these
files through public.orb.com/yourOrbLogin. |

BBC
Radio streams consistently stop after 90 seconds
-
If you stream BBC Internet radio channels, you may
experience a stream interruption after 90 seconds. This
is because RealPlayer and Media Player Classic (MPC)
send out packets to detect bandwidth at regular
intervals, causing the server to drop the stream after
90 seconds, without notifying the client. There is no
workaround to circumvent that at this time. |
 |
Malfunctions when recording Orb TV programs
- the
OrbPVR module is scheduled to be entirely rewritten in
the upcoming months. So several malfunctions and minor
bugs noted here and there will most likely only be
addressed when this code is re-written. |
 |
Streaming
to the Wii ends after 71mns
- there seems to be a
buffer limitation in the Flash player on the Wii which
would cause streams to end at about 71mns, after
producing an "Out of Memory" error.
Workaround:
try splitting your long movies/videos into parts of,
say, 30mns, and put them together in a playlist before
streaming them. |
 |
"Run Orb when I am not logged in"
feature not working in Vista
- On Windows Vista
systems with multiple users, the feature "Run
Orb when I am not logged in" in Orb tray
icon >
Configuration > Advanced (or More info, on older Orb
versions) does not work. |
 |
Only first item in
Audio/Video playlists is streamed in MySpace, Yahoo360,
Blogger
- when creating a playlist to be shared on
MySpace, yahoo360 or Blogger, only the first item of
that playlist plays, then the stream stops. This bug
will be fixed in subsequent releases. |

"Awake PC
Now" does not work in most cases if there is a NAT
-
in fact, if there is a NAT, Wake-On-LAN (WOL) will work
if:
-
the router supports broadcast address
forwarding, i.e., port forwarding UDP port 7 to
global broadcast (255.255.255.255) or subnet
broadcast (192.168.1.255). However, this is mostly
not accepted by routers. For instance, the Netgear
WGR614 accepts port forwarding creation but rejects
the packets, so WOL never works on PCs behind it.
-
the router/switch does not have an ARP timeout
at all (which is uncommon). If you set up a manual
port forwarding to your IP on UDP port 7, once your
PC is asleep, your IP is not advertized on any port:
thus, after the ARP times out, the switch does not
know which port to send the magic packet to and
drops it.
